About Culture Dreamer

Meet Joseph Mbise

Founder and lead guide of Culture Dreamer Safaris, and the reason every journey we plan begins with people, not checklists.

The founder

Travel through the eyes of the people who live here

Most safaris are built around a checklist of animals. Joseph Mbise builds his around people.

The Hadzabe hunter who lets you walk with him at dawn. The Maasai family who keeps the fire going for guests. The Chagga farmer who hands you the wooden spoon and lets you roast the coffee yourself. The wildlife of East Africa is extraordinary, but it is the welcome that guests remember for the rest of their lives.

Joseph started Culture Dreamer Safaris so that travellers could meet those hosts properly: with time to sit and talk, with a guide who speaks the language and knows the families, and with fees that go straight to the communities who open their homes.

From his base in Arusha, the town where almost every northern safari begins, Joseph and his team design each journey by hand. When you send an enquiry, it is read by someone who has driven those roads, slept in those camps and sat by those fires.

A safari shows you Africa. A cultural journey lets Africa show you who it is.

Karibu sana. Joseph

On the road

A day with Joseph

No two days are the same, but this is the rhythm Joseph loves most: people at dawn, wildlife by day, and a fire under the stars.

  1. Hadzabe hunters walking out at dawn above Lake Eyasi, Tanzania
    05:45 · Dawn

    Walking out with the Hadzabe

Before sunrise at Lake Eyasi, you join the hunters as they set off into the bush. Joseph translates, explains and knows when to simply be quiet.

  2. Guests on their first game drive watching elephants as their guide points the way
    09:00 · Morning

    Into the plains

Out on the plains, Joseph reads the land: fresh tracks, alarm calls, circling vultures. He would rather wait an hour at one sighting than rush to the next.

  3. Coffee beans roasted by hand over a wood fire on a Chagga farm near Kilimanjaro
    13:00 · Afternoon

    Coffee with a farming family

Lunch with friends on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, then pick, pound and roast coffee by hand over the fire before tasting it in the family kitchen.

  4. A guest sharing the fire with Maasai hosts at their boma at dusk
    18:30 · Evening

Around the fire in a Maasai boma

As the cattle come home, you are welcomed into the boma for chai, stories and questions in both directions, long after the stars come out.

What Joseph believes

Plan with Joseph
  • People before places

Every journey is built around who you will meet: hosts, not performers, in their homes, not on a stage.

  • Fair and direct

Communities set the terms of every visit and are paid fairly and directly for welcoming you.

  • Slow is better

Fewer parks, more time. Three nights in the right place beat five nights rushing between camps.

  • Local hands

Guides, drivers and planners from Arusha who know the roads, the camps and the families by name.

  • Honest advice

If a lodge, a month or a route is not right for you, Joseph will tell you, even if it costs him the booking.

“Tell me who you are and what you hope to feel. I will build the journey around that.”
